"We will rule the world with this thing."

So said Hunter S. Thompson, in a late night phone call to Bill Murray in 2005. That's right. It's the greatest sport ever invented--shotgun golf. First described in a column by Thompson (published the day before he died) in ESPN: The Magazine , the game calls on one's agility and acumen to shoot golf balls out of the air (or, alternately, to hit them so that they cannot be shot out of the air). It's a way to bridge the widening cultural gap between the country club crowd and the hunting-from-a-pickup crowd. Obama speaks of a divided America. This sport will bring America together more than any politician ever could.

This rye drinker--sans rye, of course--will be playing shotgun golf for only the second time later this week. I'll be out of town when I do it, and it means it'll be a while before there are any more posts. I'll return next Wednesday (Oct. 29) with another classic rye cocktail.

Til' then...keep your powder dry, keep the nine iron handy, and raise a glass of rye to that great American, the original Gonzo, Hunter S. Thompson.

Buy the ticket, take the ride! See you in the desert.

Oh yeah . . . this time we are using buck shot!

Violence-to-the-orbs will be followed by rye and brine shrimp cocktails with a whisper of alkali dust and gunpowder. Patriotism stalks the West Desert Shotgun Golf and Country Club. If we find the Prince of Wales we'll baptize him too.

So the only thing needed for you to begin enjoying pasture pool is the addition of a shotgun... :D

Man, why didn't we think of that while we where living at "The Farm" in Logan...

Jomama--You are so right. Too bad Thompson hadn't yet invented the game. We would have had some real fun.

Hmmmm...when you mentioned this today at lunch, I think I should have asked more questions. I just assumed it meant a really, really, really fast round of golf. Jamie always tells me that I need to be more tapped-in to pop culture. Clearly he is right!
